Another study links calcium intake to weight loss

Calcium may benefit weight loss for some groups of people, another Danish study shows

Including calcium in your diet may help keep your weight down, especially if you have a genetic predisposition for putting on pounds around the waist, a new Danish study shows.

The mechanism is believed to have something to do with calcium’s ability to bind fatty acids in the intestines, thus preventing them from being absorbed into the body.

Some better than others
Some foods containing calcium fare better than others: milk, cheese and calcium supplements appear to have the best slimming effects.

However, Farinaz Raziani, a PhD student at the Institute of Sports Science and Nutrition at the University of Copenhagen pointed out to Videnskab that since most foods consist of many components, their effect on our health cannot be assessed based on only one of them in isolation.

The findings of the survey support the results of a similar Danish study carried out in 2007 that a high calcium intake increases fecal fat excretion.
