Thorning-Schmidt mum on EU candidacy

Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Margrethe Vestager have also been named as potential EU candidates

PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt (Socialdemokraterne) has refused to comment on whether she is interested in the top EU postings that will be available in 2014.

The national media has speculated that Thorning-Schmidt would be interested in being a candidate for the next EU president, the EU’s foreign minister or the head of the EU Commission.

“I have no comments to this discussion and I think that it is important not to let ones imagination run too wild,” Thorning-Schmidt told assembled media yesterday prior to an EU summit in Brussels.

Aside from Thorning-Schmidt, the current NATO general secretary and former PM, Anders Fogh Rasmussen (Venstre), has also been named as a potential candidate for a top EU post when his NATO term ends next year, as has the economy minister, Margrethe Vestager (Radikale). Vestager has been the only one to directly address the rumours thus far, saying that she is not a candidate for an EU posting.
