Danes fall to Sweden in Euro decider

Zlatan Ibrahimovic too good for Denmark

Euro 2016 will be without Danish participation following Denmark’s 2-2 draw against Sweden at home at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen tonight.

The Danes came out strong, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic quelled the Danish supporters by putting the Swedes ahead after 20 minutes.

Denmark pushed for an equaliser, but Ibrahimovic once again took matters in his own hands in the 76th minute by curling a free kick past the outstretched hands of Kasper Schmeichel, effectively killing off the game.

What’s next?
Despite needing four goals to advance, the Danes didn’t give up and scored two through Yussuf Poulsen and Jannik Vestergaard, but it was too little, too late for Morten Olsen’s boys, who bow out 3-4 on aggregate after losing the first leg in Stockholm 1-2.

The result means that Denmark has now missed out on its second consecutive major competition, ending Olsen’s long-standing stint as head coach on a low note.

As Euro 2016 kicks off in France next summer, the Danes are left wondering what went wrong and who will be leading them in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
