On this day in 1847, a Danish princess was born who would go on to become a Russian empress and give her name to a city centre cinema.

Her father was Christian IX, the ‘father-in-law’ of Europe because his children married into so many royal houses.

Dagmar’s sister, for example, was Queen Alexandra, the wife of British king Edward VII.

Dagmar married Tsar Alexander III in 1866 and became empress in 1881. Her eldest son, Nicholas, was Russia’s last tsar.
