Police stepping up drink driving campaign for Christmas season

New strategy aims to tighten net around people driving under the influence

With the festive season of Christmas on the immediate horizon, the police are launching a new nationwide campaign to catch drink drivers who have overindulged on the schnapps.

The campaign starts today and will run until Christmas, particularly focusing on the traditionally massive Christmas lunch (julefrokost) weekends in December.

“We have set up a new strategy this year and will hold drink driving tests in far more places than before,” Michael Henningsen, the head of east Jutland’s traffic police department, told DR Nyheder.

“But we won’t be in any one place for very long. And people can be sure that we will be where they least suspect it.”

The police tests will be for alcohol, medicine and drugs such as cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, ecstasy and cannabis.

The police will be armed with a drug-testing apparatus that can reveal drug intake via a person’s saliva, while they also have a pupil-o-meter to measure the size of pupils.
