Large ‘climate lake’ to prevent floods in central Jutland

Lake will contain 60 million litres of water and cost 4 million kroner

A lake with a capacity of 60 million litres of water is currently being built in central Jutland to reduce the risk of flooding, reported DR.

The so-called ‘climate lake’ will cover a large area between Herning and Holstebro and will prevent the two towns from being flooded in case of heavy downpours.

Not for swimming
The project is being financed by the utility company Herning Vand and will cost about 4 million kroner.

Excavation work has already begun and the lake is expected to be finished next summer.

Søren Brandt, Herning’s co-ordinator for adaptation to climate change, has warned that the quality of water in the lake won’t be suitable for swimming.
