Controversial Danish movie takes even more controversial award as reviewers ask: what was Lars von Trier thinking?
Lars von Trier’s controversial Antichrist has already won the Nordic Council Film Prize and its lead, Charlotte Gainsbourg took the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, but it now has an additional accolade to its name: the WTF award.
Film review website Hollywood.com selects some of the most inexplicable movies of the year to receive its annual WTF (What the F***) awards in categories such as Most Unintentionally Disturbing Children’s Movie and Most Incomprehensible Plot.
But it was Von Trier’s disturbing psychological thriller Antichrist, which features graphic self mutilation that took the titular WTF Film of the Year award.
Hollywood.com labelled the move a ‘disturborama and veritable buffet of WTF delights’ and said that while growing up Danish was bound to traumatize anyone, questioned the director on ‘what kind of unholy contagion of neuroses inspired this cinematic house of horrors’.
