With 250 seats, BioMio is the largest organic cantina in Denmark. Located in an old Bosh warehouse in the meatpacking district, Kødbyen – the hippest area in town – the restaurant is hard to miss.
In January, BioMio changed owners and is now run by Rune Friberg. The restaurant got a new face-lift and the kitchen underwent a much-needed renovation.
Industrial and informal
Despite its industrial look, the interior of BioMio is very inviting. There are long wooden tables and barstools, stainless steel lampshades and an open-plan kitchen where you can watch the chefs perform their craft.
Dining at BioMio is very informal as guests are expected to share the long tables and are seated close to each other.
Now with full table service
Since its opening in 2011, the restaurant has been overwhelmingly popular. So, reservations are a must if you wish to secure a place to sit on a Friday or Saturday evening.
We got there on Monday evening and the restaurant was almost full, buzzing like a beehive. A full-waiter service was a pleasant change from the previous self-service with chip cards and beepers. And although casual, the staff were really attentive and helpful.
Local fused with Asia
Cooking with passion, BioMio offers a fusion of Asian and European cuisine and changes its menu monthly. Everything, including wine and beer, is certified organic – the ingredients used in the meals are fresh, locally-produced, and biodynamic.
The restaurant also accommodates the various dietary needs guests might have, offering options for vegetarians, vegans as well as omnivores. Even those with a gluten intolerance can find suitable dishes on the menu.
Our vegetarian experience
As vegetarians, my partner and I opted for the meat-free dishes. While I started our culinary journey with a crunchy slaw of cabbage with a surprisingly hot chilli kick, my partner chose grilled vegetables topped with Danish hard cheese.
Both dishes were served in glass jars and built up our appetite for the main course.
Simple yet tasty
There were eight mains to choose from on the menu, of which four were suitable for vegetarians.
I opted for the gnocchi. Prepared with an Asian twist, it was served with deliciously fresh mushrooms, cauliflower, grated cheese and rocket. My partner opted for the green wok, and got a generous portion of crispy veggies in teriyaki sauce topped with sunflower seeds.
While simple, both meals tasted great, yet we decided the gnocchi was our favourite.
The famous cheesecake
And finally to satisfy our sweet tooths, we ordered BioMio’s famous cheesecake with blueberries and sprinkled crumble. We also tried out the melon with honey cake dessert – but while it was tasty, it could not beat the cheesecake.
Both desserts were served in glass jars just like our starters, giving the presentation a rustic touch.
Come early or order to-go
If you wish to dine at BioMio, come early to avoid waiting – the peak times are between 7 and 8pm.
Lunch is served from noon and dinner from 5pm. It is also possible to order takeaway.
