Bendtner hit with biggest drink driving fine in Danish history
Football player must pay 842,000 kroner and will lose his licence for three years
Football player Nicklas Bendtner is facing a 842,000 kroner fine and the loss of his driver's licence for three years for his drink driving incident over the weekend.
The 842,000 kroner fine was calculated based on Bendtner's salary, which is roughly a million kroner per month. The fine is figured by dividing an offender's annual salary by 2.5 and then multiplying by the blood alcohol level, which in Bendtner's case was 0.175 percent. According to public broadcaster DR, it amounts to the largest drink driving fine in Denmark's history.
The striker called yesterday's day in court the worst day in his life.
His lawyer, Michael Juul Eriksen, disputed the high fine.
"It's completely out of proportion that someone should pay 842,000 kroner for something that would cost 5,000 kroner for other," Eriksen said.
