The City of Copenhagen is planning to build 6,000 new student residences by 2025.

According to the mayor, Frank Jensen, they should be affordable on the SU study grant.

“Our  goal is to build apartments which students can afford on SU if they live alone. They should cost between 3400-3500 kroner," explained Jensen (S) to Politiken.

It's too expensive
The City has been criticised for the fact that some of the new student-residences are too expensive. Students who are moving into the dormitories in Havremarkens School in Nørrebro this October have to pay up to 6,200 kroner, which is more than the monthly SU allowance, for a one-room apartment.

Similarly, some of the new student apartments in DSB's former headquarters in Sølvgade, will cost around 5000 to 6000 kroner for 25 to 30 square meters.

“If the prices goes this high, it should be possible to share the apartment,” believes Jensen. “6,000 kroner is a lot of money if you live alone."

In great need of housing
Copenhagen has been accused of ignoring the student-housing situation for many years, but this seems to slowly be starting to change.

While the number of students has exploded over the past years, only a few student-residences have been built due to the construction ban on residences for young people between 1995 and 2012.

The city predicts that 20,000 more students will need a place to live in the next five years.
