On his two-day state visit to China, foreign minister, Martin Lidegaard, made a deal with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, to bring two giant panda bears to the Copenhagen Zoo.

"I'm very happy that China will allow Denmark to borrow two pandas," Lidegaard told DR.

The zoo already houses red pandas and has tried to get a giant panda for four years, said Steffen Stræde, head of Copenhagen Zoo.

"This is huge," he told TV2. "It's the ultimate symbol of the friendship between China and Denmark and something that only happens on very rare occasions."

Final station: Copenhagen
It's still uncertain when Denmark will receive the two pandas or the duration of their stay.

The giant panda is one of the most endangered species in the world with less than 2000 individuals left on earth.
