Going is a bare necessity!

If you’re a Disney fan and can’t get enough of songs like ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The Bare Necessities’ or ‘Circle of Life’, then you can look forward to DR’s popular Disney Concert at Falconer Salen in Frederiksberg this weekend.

In the summer of 2011, DR obtained permission to put together the original Disney cartoons with live performances of all the well-known Disney songs. Being the first person to get permission to edit the popular Disney films was a dream come true for producer Jens Hofman, and now DR is repeating the concert with performances all over the country as part of its New Year concert series.

“In collaboration with Disney we have developed a concert that involves all the essential elements from Disney’s magical world: the famous characters, the films and the magic, the music and the songs and, of course, the fairy tales,” explained Hofman.

“The concert will be a tour de force of the greatest Disney songs and will also include film sequences to go with the songs.”

Hofman got the idea for DR’s Disney Concert after watching a concert consisting of Disney songs arranged by Disney Music Publishing. He wasn’t too impressed though, especially because the songs were only illustrated by still pictures from the films. Instead of complaining however, he went home and rented all the films on DVD, picked out the best songs and got together a team, who cut out the most important sequences from the films, which he then used to illustrate one or more of the songs with.

“Then we sent it to Los Angeles and didn’t hear anything for 20 days, but then I received a letter stating that what I had done was completely illegal, but that they also thought it was pretty cool,” recalled Hofman.

The show at Falconer Salen will include music from some of the best-loved Disney films such as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp, Fantasia and many more. The music will be played by the Danish National Chamber Orchestra, which normally consists of 42 musicians but has been extended for the occasion with a full rhythm section as well as the Danish National Vocal Ensemble.

The songs will be performed by some of the best singers in Denmark such as Maria Lucia, Stig Rossen, Annette Heick, Henrik Launbjerg, and Monique and Pelle Emil Hebsgaard. Monique Hebsgaard and Heick are experienced Disney singers who have both recorded Disney ballads, and the others are all established singers, so the quality is guaranteed to be of the highest standard. The whole show will be conducted by DR’s first guest conductor David Firman.

With Christmas and New Year over, a lot of people are probably experiencing a dose of the January blues, so DR’s Disney Concert is a welcome shot of sunshine. Forget about the grey skies and rain and allow yourself to get drawn into a magical universe. And above all, remember what Walt Disney famously said: “Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever!”
