The town of Vimmerby in southern Sweden has two major claims to fame. It the birthplace of the legendary author Astrid Lindgren and it hosts the largest and oldest rally in northern Europe.

The KAK Midnattssolsrallyt rally, which consists of homologated rally cars pre-1981, will take place this summer from June 29-July 2. The rally originally started in 1950, before relaunching again in 2006 following a lengthy hiatus.

The rally is a mecca for petrol heads and car enthusiasts around Scandinavia, and the race itself will include numerous cars from various eras. If you’ve got the proper car, you can even sign up for the race by May 1. Read more about the rally here.

Family fun
Vimmerby, which is located about 300 km north of Helsingborg, has been chosen as the venue due to the number of high-quality gravel roads in the area.

And if you’re not that keen on motor racing and the smell of petrol fumes, there’s plenty of other things to see in the area, including Astrid Lindgren’s World, the amusement park based on the writings of the famous author.
