Little Mermaid joins Pussy Riot protest

Statue gets makeover ahead of today’s verdict in Moscow and protest outside Russian Embassy in Copenhagen

UPDATE (17/8/12, 16:04): The three members of Pussy Riot were found guilty and were each sentenced to two years in jail.

ORIGINAL (17/8/12, 10:25): For generations the Danes have been trying to keep their beloved trademark statue safe from any harm, but this hasn’t stopped the Little Mermaid from trying out a number of different looks.

It has been in covered in paint, dressed up in a burqa, and on one occasion even tried to pull off the headless look made popular in Paris in the 1790s – all in the name of protest.

And yesterday morning, the statue was sporting yet another look: a mask and a sign that read: “Free Pussy Riot now”.

Pussy Riot are a Russian female mask-wearing punk group who were arrested in Russia in February on charges of ‘hooliganism’ following their protest in a Moscow cathedral, where they sang a 'protest prayer' aimed against the close links between the Russian Orthodox Church and the country's president, Vladimir Putin.

“It is an action that should show that Denmark sympathises with the Pussy Riot situation,” said a member of the anonymous feminist activist group that was behind the Little Mermaid incident.

Their trial, which is expected to come to a conclusion in Moscow today, has attracted attention from every corner of the globe. Its supporters have already dubbed today 'Global Pussy Riot Day', and a protest is scheduled to take place outside the Russian Embassy today at 3pm, to which 300 people have already confirmed their attendance on Facebook.
