Poker champion shot and robbed
One of the country's top poker players was robbed by three armed assailants on Sunday night after they forced their way into his home after first presenting themselves as pizza delivery-men and shot him in the leg.
Theo Jørgensen, 40, was shot three times in the thigh after the men, described as "English-speaking", forced their way into his home where his son and daughter were sleeping.
While the police did not say what the robbers managed to take from Jørgensen’s home, Ekstra Bladet reports that they made off with about 35,000 kroner.
Following the attack, Jørgensen wrote on Facebook that he had taken precautions to prevent such a robbery.
“It’s important for me to underline that I am a careful man,” Jørgensen wrote. “I have prepared mentally and practically so that in situations like this I could protect myself and my family from people outside.”
He added that people might wrongly believe that he kept a lot of cash in his home and as a result had installed alarm systems to protect his home.
“It turns out sadly that this was not enough,” Jørgensen wrote.
Danish sporting stars including tennis player Caroline Wozniacki and Mikkel Kessler have voiced their support for the poker star.
Jørgensen, a winner on both the World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker, has earned over 21 million kroner from his 20-year poker career.
