‘Jagten’ (‘The Hunt’) late last night failed to win the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, losing out to the Italian entry, ‘La grande bellezza’ (‘The Great Beauty’).

The result was somewhat of a surprise, and bookmakers were quick to install the Italian film as the new favourite to win the Oscar on March 2.

Heading into the final week, it had been an 11/2 shot, third in the betting behind the French favourite, ‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ (5/8), and ‘Jagten’ (6/4).

Both ‘Jagten’ and ‘La grande bellezza’ will find out on Thursday whether they have made the jump from the nine-film shortlist to the final five for the Oscars.

For director Thomas Vinterberg, it is the second time one of his films has missed out at the Globes, following the failure of ‘Festen’ (‘The Celebration’) in 1999.
