Valdemar’s Day

Legend has it that on this day in 1219, Denmark’s flag Dannebrog fell from the heavens in Estonia while the Danish King Valdemar II was in the midst of battling the Estonians at the Battle of Lyndanisse. The Danes were seemingly on the brink of being beaten, but with the arrival of the flag – following a prayer to God – the Danes went on to defeat the Estonians.

Michael Laudrup turns 50

Last week, Prince Henrik celebrated his 80th, and this week its Denmark’s prince of football’s turn as Michael Laudrup reaches his half-century. Indisputably this country’s best ever football player, his sublime technique, and an ability to create passes that only he could see, helped him win championships with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Ajax during his brilliant career
