Hurdles runner Sara Slott Petersen wrote Danish athletics history in Lausanne, Swtizerland on Thursday evening when she became the first ever Dane to win a Diamond League meet.
The 28-year-old Aarhus resident won the grueling 400 metre hurdles in a time of 55.01 seconds, well ahead of the rest of the field.
Petersen came close to a Diamond League triumph just last week in Paris, when she finished second place despite running a time of 53.99 seconds which broke a Nordic record that had stood since 1986.
Lousy Lausanne time
But the Dane was more proud of that second place finish as it came against tougher competition.
“The field wasn’t as strong as it was in Paris. The second place is considerably better than the win today,” she told Ekstra Bladet tabloid, blaming the wind for the slower time.
“Had I run a quicker time today, it would have been worth more, but it was fun to go out there and win.”
