Select Shopping | Christmas presents special

We doubt any of these will work on her

In the final instalment of Select Shopping’s Christmas presents special, we take a look at some festive fail-safes that will surely (probably, hopefully) keep everyone happy. Merry Christmas!

Board games
You’ll never be bored with a good old-fashioned board game (oof!). At the risk of sounding clichéd, old-school classics like Scrabble really are fun for all the family, and educational to boot (‘zo’: a cross between a yak and a cow? Who knew?) Alongside firm favourites such as Cluedo and Monopoly are quite a few new games that are worth getting to grips with. Wordie Wars, for example, is a truly excellent choice for any wordsmiths you may know.

Games, Jorcks Passage, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00 & Sat 10:00-16:00; www.gamesweb.dk

The DIY gift
Make like Martha Stewart and get crafty this Christmas; a homemade gift is nothing if not original. Naturally, a quick internet search will throw up all manner of amusing gift ideas. My personal favourite is the site notmartha.org, which shows you how to make quirky items such as a bacon cup, or a tiny gingerbread house that perches on the edge of your mug. Ingenius! Hit up Copenhagen’s Panduro store for all your DIY needs.

Panduro Hobby, Nørre Farimagsgade 74, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00 & Sat 10:00-16:00 , Sun 12:00-16:00; www.pandurohobby.dk

You really can’t go wrong with a good book to tide you over the festive period. Top of this year’s bestseller list is Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch, hailed by the New York Times as a dazzling Dickensian thriller. Doctor Sleep, Stephen King’s acclaimed sequel to The Shining should also make for a gripping yuletide read. Hvor er Holger? (Where’s Wally) always makes a good stocking filler for little ones and not-so-little ones alike. Politikens Boghal has an impressive array of English language books to choose from.

Rådhuspladsen 37, Cph K; open weekdays 09:00-19:00, Wed 09:00-21:00 & Sat 10:00-16:00; www.boghallen.dk

If you like Lego, then congratulations! You’re in the right place. Stroll down Strøget and pick your bricks in Denmark’s flagship Lego store. While the quintessential Danish toy is a sure-fire hit with youngsters, adult fans will get a kick out of the Architecture Studio series, which allows you to recreate iconic buildings of world architecture, including the Empire State Building and Burj Khalifa.

Vimmelskaftet 37, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-17:00; www.lego.dk
