The 2014 Reuters Institute Digital News Report has established that Denmark has one of the highest percentages of smartphone and tablet news consumption in the world.

The study of ten of the most media-savvy countries in the world revealed that over half (52 percent) of Danish news consumers use their smartphones to get the latest word, while readers in the UK (33 percent), Germany (32 percent) and the US (31 percent) are lagging behind.

Similarly, over a third of Danes read the news on their tablets, whereas it is a less popular platform for readers in the UK (23 percent), the US (19 percent) and Germany (15 percent).

Danes willing to pay for quality news
Denmark also leads the world for the percentage of newsreaders who use Apple's products (58 percent), whereas Germany (28 percent) ranks near the bottom.

This result is significant, as studies have shown that Apple users are not only much more likely to access news on their devices, but are nearly twice as likely to pay for this news.

Worldwide trends
One of the major global trends is a general increase in smartphone and tablet use, as less people are relying on their computers as their primary news source.

Additionally, Facebook is by the far the leading source for news across the globe, though certain countries (US, UK, Spain) rely heavily on Twitter as well.

Simple questions, complex results
The study was conducted through YouGov, asking online newsreaders simple questions about the frequency with which they use certain devices to access news.

By filtering out anyone who had not read the news in the past week, as well as targeting specific ages, genders and social classes, the study is meant to be representative of each country’s population as a whole.
