Vaslav Nijinsky, Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev captured the hearts and minds of generations of ballet fans, but could any of them claim the adulation of 300 million plus people?

Because Sidsel Boye Rasmussen, a 14-year-old student at Holstebro Ballet School near Aarhus, did just that thanks to a performance on a popular entertainment show broadcast by China’s Hunan TV on May 30.

An online frenzy
Millions of Chinese fans then took to the internet in a bid to find out more about the Struer dancer they dubbed the ‘Danish Angel’.

“She’s like an angel. She’s more than ‘beautiful’ – my heart melts just looking at her,” purred one commenter on the Chinese social media site Weibo.

“Someone like this really exists? I wouldn’t call anybody ‘goddess’ anymore,” observed another.

Rasmussen now has in excess of 200,000 followers on her Instagram site and is the seventh most talked about person on Weibo.

Fatherly advice
“It's very overwhelming,” her father Jens Boye Rasmussen told BT tabloid.

“We have told her she should focus on ballet school. She must keep both feet on the ground.”

A return looks likely
According to the Qianjiang Evening News, the Danish embassy in China has promised users of Weibo that the Danish Angel could return to China in the autumn.

The performance on Hunan TV, which was part of a Sino-Danish cultural exchange, also featured Danish singer Medina. But so far there has been no talk of a return to China, or any nicknames.
