White Christmas? More like grey

Christmas looks to be a dour and wet affair weather-wise

If you’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas, making snowmen in the garden or throwing a snowball at that pesky neighbour, you’re in for a disappointment.

Meteorologist at national weather service DMI are willing to bet their left roasted chestnut that Denmark will miss out on a white Christmas this year. We can, however, look forward to rain, wind and perhaps even some double-digit temperatures.

“December 24 will be a cloudy day with rain in most places and temperatures in between five and ten degrees,” Klaus Larsen, a DMI meteorologist, told Ritzau news service. “So, the Christmas mood with lots of white landscapes won’t be something that we’ll see.”

Wet and windy weekend
The rain and blustery weather is expected to linger throughout most of this weekend. The western part of the country could see some high winds over the weekend that may affect traffic going across bridges, although it won’t reach the critical levels of the storm Bodil.

“Mild and humid air is still moving in across Denmark. It will be a December weekend with up to ten degrees, with rain and wind – with a chance of seeing some sunlight,” Larsen said.

Today is also the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. The sun will set just seven hours after rising, and the night between Saturday and Sunday will be the longest of the year.

So while the lack of a white Christmas may leave many disappointment, some solace can be found in the fact that ever-so-slowly the days will start getting longer again.
