Only the world number 39 stands in between Woz and a place in a grand slam final for the first time since 2009

Caroline Wozniacki absolutely annihilated her Italian opponent Sara Errani in the quarter-finals of the US Open yesterday, dropping just one game on her way to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in just 65 minutes.

And it’s not like the Italian number 13 seed served badly. She got 82 percent of her first services in, compared to Wozniacki’s 71 percent, but could not live with her opponent’s returns as the Dane won 76 percent of her receiving points and broke serve in every game.

Next up for Wozniacki is the Chinese world number 39, Peng Shuai, who she will not underestimate given the relatively easy manner in which Peng dispatched Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic 6-2 6-1.

She can start to believe
Nevertheless, following her win over Maria Sharapova in the last 16, Wozniacki will start to feel that a place in Saturday’s final – most probably against Serena Williams or Victoria Azarenka – is hers by rights.

And the bookmakers agree, slashing the odds on her winning her first grand slam (from 30 attempts) down to 13/5.

"It means so much to me, it has been a pretty up and down year for me and to be here in the semi-final of the US Open is an incredible feeling," Wozniacki told media afterwards.
