Lars von Trier's  provocative 'Nymphomaniac' has been selected as the Danish candidate for the Nordic Council Film Prize, DR reports.

A total of five films from Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark have been nominated.

The other entries are the gritty drama 'Concrete Night' (Finland), the country romance 'Of Men and Horses' (Iceland), the psychological drama 'Blind' (Norway), and disaster movie 'Force Majeure' (Sweden).

All of the films stand out at national and international level as significant cinematic works and have already won several awards and honours at festivals in Europe and further afield, claims the Nordic Film and TV Fond.

One of a kind
Lars von Trier is one of a kind – not only among the Nordic countries but in the whole film industry – explained the jury who have identified 'Nymphomaniac' as the Danish bid.

Written and directed by Von Trier,  'Nymphomaniac' is a two-part drama starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Uma Thurman, and Willem Dafoe.

The movie has caused a great deal of controversy due to its explicit sexual content.

The New Yorker, for instance, described 'Nymphomaniac' as "a pornographic work of art—an obsessive, violent, and at times remarkably eccentric sex epic that is often brilliant and never simple-minded or dull".

Announcement in October
The prize winner will be announced on Wednesday October 29 at the city hall in Stockholm and receive 350,000 kroner.

Last year's winner was the Danish movie 'The Hunt'. Other recent Danish winners include 'Submarino', 'Antichrist', 'The Art of Crying' and 'Murder' also received the prize.
