Denmark wins the World Cup… in FIFA

The youngster also won a 110,000 kroner cash prize and a new car

The Danish national team may have faltered during qualification for the ongoing World Cup in Brazil, but one Dane certainly hasn’t been a let-down. In fact, he’s gone all the way.

August Rosenmeier, 18, won the title yesterday after taking out a 20-year-old Englishman, David Bytheway, 3-1 in the final of the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) World Champion – a tournament that is held alongside the real World Cup in Brazil. Former Brazilian World Cup legend Ronaldo handed him the trophy.

“I’m absolutely delighted and I can’t describe how it feels to be champion,” Rosenmeier told FIFA afterwards. “Denmark isn’t here at the World Cup, but we showed them we can play football on the virtual pitch. It was amazing to receive the trophy from Ronaldo.”

Aside from the trophy and experience, Rosenmeier also won a 110,000 kroner cash prize and a new car.

Best out of 2 million
Around 2 million contestants tried to qualify for the event with just 20 making it to the group stage. Another Dane, Anders Bollerup, also made it that far, but was knocked out early.

On his way to the final, Rosenmeier knocked out three Dutchmen and was losing 0-1 in the final before storming back to win the title. In the final, Rosenmeier was playing as Brazil and Bytheway as his home country's biggest tormentors, Germany.

Now in its tenth year, this was the first time the FIWC Grand Final took place at the same time and in the same country as the FIFA World Cup.
