One of the two people arrested in connection with the string of arsons in Albertslund has been released by a Glostrup judge despite the police still strongly suspecting him and wanting him remanded in custody.

“We are maintaining our charges against him and we are continuing to investigate the case,” the chief investigator in the case, Michael Storgaard, told Ekstra Bladet tabloid.

Police in Albertslund made two arrests within the last week after the western Copenhagen suburb suffered more than 100 fires over the past six months.

An 18-year-old man was arrested not long after recently-closed youth centre Frihjulet was burned to the ground on March 12 because he was on the scene displaying suspicious behaviour. The police were forced to release him, but picked him up again later on and the 16-year-old boy was arrested just days after.

Since 21 September 2012, there have been 103 arson cases in Albertslund Council, concentrated around the terrace-housing area in the council’s southern part near the S-train station.

Containers, cars, sheds, camping wagons and a number of other types of buildings have been set ablaze by the serial arsonists.

Albertslund’s citizens have had enough, setting up a Facebook group called ‘Stop brandene I Albertslund’ (Stop the fires in Albertslund), which already has nearly 700 members.
