Plans are afoot for a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge across the city harbour in Copenhagen, the City Council has revealed.

The bridge – which will connect Vester Voldgade and Langebrogade in Amager near the Langebro Bridge – is expected to be completed in 2018.

“We must ensure that Copenhagen is a good city to move around in,” Frank Jensen, the city mayor, said in a press release.

“So we are well into the process of binding the city with more Metro lines and more bridges across the harbour so that Copenhagen will function better on a daily basis.”

The bridge project is part of a joint co-operation between the City Council and philanthropist organisation Realdania, which has gifted the bridge to the city in order to develop the accessibility of the central part of the city harbour.

The bridge will become part of the green bicycle route network ‘Det Grønne Cykelrutenet’ and super-bicycle route ‘Havneruten’ in the harbour area. It will stretch across where the original Langebro Bridge was located from the beginning of the 1600s to the start of the 1900s.

”When cyclists have to cross the harbour today, they must traverse the car-packed Langebo or deal with the bicycle-congested Knippelsbro,” Morten Kabell, the deputy mayor for technical and environmental issues, said in a press release.

The preliminary pre-qualification process of the project is expected to be finished by October this year, while construction is set to commence sometime in 2016.

The news follows in the wake of the the City Council revealing in May that it had found the contractors needed to finish three other new bicycle bridges that had been delayed since last year.
