The opposition party Liberal Alliance has ruffled some feathers by proposing at its summer meeting on Sunday to make it legal to be in possession of cannabis and hard narcotics.

Furthermore, the party wants an increased use of medicinal cannabis in the national health sector and recommends continuing the ‘fixerum’ injection room initiative.

The head of Liberal Alliance, Anders Samuelsen, contended that the Danish policy on drugs has failed and that the legislation restricts vulnerable drug addicts due to a moralising and intrusive approach to citizens.

“We know that it doesn’t help to punish people for being in possession of drugs,” Samuelsen told Politiken newspaper.

“We are not talking about a total liberalisation of drug dealing. It should still be illegal to sell drugs, but not to be in possession of them.”

Support found wanting
But Liberal Alliance’s proposal has not garnered any support from largest opposition party Venstre, or the government coalition party Socialdemokraterne.

“Liberal Alliance needs to become aware of the consequences of narcotics,” Flemming Møller Mortensen, the health spokesperson for Socialdemokraterne, said to Politiken.
