Two men died late last night in an accident that occurred at the port town of Strandby Havn in northern Jutland. A third man who attempted to rescue the deceased is hospitalised and is in a serious condition.

A lorry driver who came to pick up the fishing boat’s catch discovered the lifeless bodies of the boat's 58-year-old skipper and his 21-year-old nephew in the hold.

“They apparently died as a result of hydrogen sulphide poisoning,” said Carsten Kjær from the North Jutland Police.

Heroic attempt
The boat’s third crew member, a 24-year-old man, jumped into the hold in an attempt to rescue his colleagues and immediately lost consciousness due to the fumes. The truck driver then notified rescue personnel who sent a rescue helicopter and ambulances to the tiny harbour.

When rescuers finally managed to haul the three men up from the hold, two of them were not breathing and were pronounced dead at 23:15 last night. The crew member who tried to save his comrades was taken to hospital in Ålborg, where he remained on a ventilator as of this morning.
