Wandering voters: SFers going DF

Former red voters choosing the far right

A significant number of voters who cast their ballot for the left-wing Socialistisk Folkeparti (SF) in the 2011 general election have become so disillusioned with the party that they are now leaning to the far right and have changed allegiance to Dansk Folkeparti (DF). DF pulling voters from Venstre and PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s Socialdemokraterne party was not as surprising as seeing voters from the far-left embracing the DF's agenda.

A new book called ‘Vælgere på vandring’ (Wandering voters) claims that 8 percent of SF voters have made the unexpected switch.

Professor of political science at Aalborg University Jørgen Goul Andersen edited the book and said the switch has much to do with voter distrust.

“There has been a significant movement,” Andersen told Jyllands-Posten. “How it will effect elections remains to be seen, but DF, which started as a protest party, has become one of the country’s major political parties.”
