Denmark take on Spain in World Cup final: LIVE UPDATE

Mikkel Hansen and Denmark have been a dominant force in handball for the a decade now, but one thing missing from their trophy case is the World Cup. Can Denmark beat the Spanish hosts and get their hands on the trophy that they came so close to winning two years ago when they lost the final to France? Copenhagen Post is following the match

2013 Handball World Cup final: Denmark – Spain

17:00 – 15 minutes to kick-off!

17:04 – The players are coming out now. Time for the national anthems and player introductions.

17:08 – Referees introduced. They're from Slovenia.

17:10 – Denmark's national anthem playing. There are a good number of Danish fans in Barcelona.

17:11 – Spain beat Slovenia to get to the final. Denmark overcame Croatia.

17:15 – And they'reoff Spain starts with the ball!!!!!

17:16 – 0-1 to Spain. Garcia scores.

17:17 – Denmark throws it away

17:18 – Niklas Landin!!! Two huge saves for the Danish keeper.

17:19 – But Spanish keeper, Sterbik, saves a shot from Hansen and Spain score again 0-2 through Canellas

17:20 – Denmark miss again and Spain punish Denmark on the counter 0-3! Not the best start for the Danes

17:21 – 1-3. Finally Denmark score. Kasper Søndegaard.

17:22 – 2-3. Spain miss and Denmark score again. This time Rasmus Lauge

17:23 - 2-4. Spain scores from a long shot by Garcia

17:24 – 3-4. Henrik Møllgaard!

17:25 - 3-5 Spain score again through Canellas

17:26 – 4-5 Kasper Søndegaard once again!

17:27 – 4-6 Canellas scores his third goal. With his back to the goal

17:28 – 5-6 Mikkel Hansen blasts one in

17:29 – 5-7 Spain again! And its Canellas once more

17:30 – Both teams miss chances

17:31 - 5-8 Spain pulling away again. This time it's Rivera

17:32 – 6-8 Anders Eggert scores a penalty

17:33 – The Danes look nervous so far

17:34 – 7-8 Eggert again from the wing

17:35 – 7-9 Rivera scores a nice one from the wing

17:36 – Danish substitute keeper Green with a great save

17:37 – 8-9 Søndegaard gets his third!

17:38 – 8-10 Canellas penalty shot

17:39 – 8-11 Rivera once again. Danes falling behind

17:40 – 8-12 Spain up by four now. Danes look bewildered

17:41 – 8-13 Spain are running over the Danes at the moment. Their keeper is a beast. Coach Wilbek takes a timeout

17:42 – 9-13 Finally! Markussen bangs one home from distance

17:43 – 9-14 Spain on another counter

17:44 – 9-15 Canellas scores . Spain are now six up. It's looking bad. Really bad.

17:45 – 9-16 A lob from Rivera. It's looking like a massacre.

17:46 – 10-16 Hans Lindberg finally scores for Denmark

17:47 – 10-17 Enterrios getting in on the Spanish fiesta now

17:49 – 10-18 Aguinagalde twisting and turning his way through the feeble Danish defense

17:50 – Halftime: Denmark are eight goals behind after playing one of the worst halves of handball in years. It's looking like another silver medal unless they completely change their game. Wilbek will have a few choice words for that first half performance.

18:05 – My kingdom for a miracle. Second half kicks off. Denmark miss and Spain are taking their time. Landin saves!

18:06 – 11-18 Møllgaard scores. Operation miracle is off and running

18:07 – 11-19 Spain back on track thanks to Aguinagalde

18:08 – 11-20 Long shot from Maqueda

18:09 – 11-21 Amazing. Spain are destroying the Danes now

18:10 – 11-22 It's getting embarrassing now. Biggest disparity between two final teams since early 1990's

18:11 – Hansen throws it away again. He's been a shadow of his usual self

18:12 – 11-23 Maqueda piles on the misery

18:13 – 11-24 This game is over. Hansen is yanked. Denmark's worst performance EVER! And it happens in the World Cup final.

18:14 – 11-25 The farce continues. Denmark hasnt lost so far in this tournament…until now

18:16 – 11-26 Danes on their way to their biggest defeat in over 20 years

18:17 – 12-26 Wow. Nøddesbo gets one. Denmark's first goal in ages

18:18 – 12-27 Canellas  once again

18:19 – 12-28 Canellas again.

18:20 – 12-29 Rivera gets his sixth- Denmark look like an amatuer team

18:21 – Sterbik is saving everything. Huge game for th Spanish keeper. Man of the match hands down

18:22 – 13-29 Markussen scores a long shot.

18:23 – 14-29 Wow, Denmark score two in  row for the first time since the opening of the game. Mikkel Hansen

18:24 – 15-29 Møllgaard. But it's all too little too late.

18:25 – 15-30 Montoro. Unitl now the biggest World Cup final spanking was in 1958 when Sweden beat Czekoslovakia 22-12

18:27 – Ten minutes left of this Danish nightmare.

18:27  – Spain are playing their reserves now

18:28 – 15-31 the hits keep coming

18:31 – Sterbik has saved 45 percent of all shots. Class

18:34 – Five minutes left. The Spanish fans and players are celebrating already.

18:35 – Denmark miss again

18:36 – 17-34 Toft pulls one back

18:37 – 18-34 Penalty from Eggert. Eggert will at least finish as tournament top scorer.

18:38 – This defeat will be the biggest in coach Wilbek's career !

18:38 – 18-35 Spain keep scoring

18:39 – 19-35   Danes score in last second.
