Despite only managing a draw against FC Vestsjælland, Aalborg won their fourth Superliga title yesterday after its rivals FC Midtjylland slipped up 2-3 at home to FC Copenhagen thanks to a last-minute Christian Bolaños winner.

The result means that Kent Nielsen’s boys are now four points ahead of FCM at the top of the table with just one game left and cannot be caught.

Meanwhile, FCM are in danger of losing their Champion League qualification spot to FC Copenhagen, who are now just two points adrift.

Aalborg have a chance to win the double when they take on the freshly-dethroned FC Copenhagen in the Danish cup final at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Thursday.

The new Danish champions, who have never won the double, haven’t won the cup in 44 years, finishing runner-up an agonising seven times during that spell.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the league, Aarhus and Viborg drew the short straws in the relegation battle after both sides suffered heavy home defeats.

Danes sitting pretty in the Giro
The year’s first grand tour, Giro d’Italia, kicked off in Belfast over the weekend and the Danish riders for Tinkoff-Saxo have fared well thanks to a solid team trial on day one that saw the team finish fourth. Eight out of the team’s nine riders, including the team’s two Danes, Chris Anker Sørensen and Christopher Juul-Jensen, are all in the top 31and less than 40 seconds behind current Australian leader Michael Mathews.

Danes off to rough start in Minsk
The Danish ice hockey team are off to a bad start at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in Belarus after losing their two opening games to Sweden and Norway over the weekend. The Danes sit bottom of the group and need to beat Italy tomorrow to stand any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

Agger scores in vain
Daniel Agger scored Liverpool’s first as his club did their part over the weekend by beating Newcastle 2-1. The win was in vain, however, as Manchester City beat West Ham 2-0 at home to claim their second Premier League title in three years. At the other end, William Kvist and Lasse Vigen Christensen were relegated with Fulham, who along with Norwich City and Cardiff City had no hope of avoiding the drop heading into the final day.

Magnussen and McLaren disappoint again
Kevin Magnussen and the McLaren Formula One team once again failed to impress in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. The young Dane finished in 12th, one place behind teammate Jenson Button. After initially taking the F1 world by storm with his second place in Australia, Magnussen now sits ninth in the overall points standings after five races.

Pierre finally picked for As
Denmark coach Morten Olsen has named Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in his squad to face Hungary and Sweden in upcoming friendlies later this month.  The 18-year-old is Denmark’s brightest starlet at the moment after playing in seven Bundesliga games for Bayern Munich this season. Kian Hansen, Jakob Ahlmann Nielsen, Jakob Ankersen and keeper Jesper Hansen could also be handed their first caps in red and white, while Nicklas Bendtner was left out.
