Caroline Wozniacki will need to get past the favourite and the third favourite at the French Open – and that’s just to reach the semi-finals.

Thirteen-time grand slam winner and current tournament favourite Serena Williams (best price: 5/2 at Bet 365), whose only French Open title came in 2002, is the Dane’s probable opponent in the fourth round, with three-time grand slam winner Maria Sharapova (7/1 at Bet 365) waiting for her in the quarter-finals.

Williams knocked Wozniacki out of the Madrid Open in May, but the Dane will take heart from her performance in the first set, which she won 6-1. And Wozniacki was triumphant in their meeting at the hardcourt Miami Masters back in March.

Sharapova, meanwhile, who beat Wozniacki in the semis in Miami, has won every major bar the French Open and is yet to make it beyond the semis at Roland Garros.

But it doesn’t stop there. While the American and Russian players face no obvious banana skins on the way to those potential clashes, Wozniacki does in the form of Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou (2000/1 at Ladbroke’s), 29, a player whose career is back on track after a four-year slump. Back in 2003, she was the number 14 in the world. However, since making the third round of the French Open of that year, Daniilidou has, in five attempts, failed to make it beyond the first round again.

Wozniacki remains ninth favourite for the tournament, but has drifted to 40/1 (Bet 365) since her unkindly draw, which was announced earlier on Friday.
