The preliminary results of a research project show there is no correlation between breastfeeding and ADHD.

Thus far, researchers have studied 271 children for 26 months looking for a link between breastfeeding and ADHD. And the results so far indicate there is no connection between the two.

Mothers relieved
“I felt tremendous guilt because I could not breastfeed,” Christina Føns Wills, a mother from Funen, told DR Fyn. “It wasn’t a choice and I have been very upset. I’m glad to hear there is no correlation between breastfeeding and ADHD.”

Sofie Bruun Thomsen was forced to stop breastfeeding after five weeks and hopes that the research will stop people from giving her what she called “reproachful looks”.

“There is a kind of stigma when you choose not to breastfeed or are forced to stop early,” said Thomsen.

Part of a larger study
The research project is part of a larger project at Odense Børnekohorte where researchers will follow over 2,500 children from Odense from birth until the age of 18.

The final results of the breastfeeding/ADHD study will be released in late summer or early autumn.
