On this day 60 years ago in 1955, Denmark became the first nation in Europe to offer a vaccination for polio.

Developed by the State Serum Institute, the vaccine was offered after a polio epidemic swept across the nation in 1952 causing permanent damage to more than 2,000 and killing 250 people.
