Podio, a provider of social networks for businesses, was acquired by IT company Citrix, it was announced this week.

The privately-held Podio, which has its European headquarters in Copenhagen, is the creator of a cloud-based software platform aimed at small and medium-sized businesses for project management and collaboration purposes.

The software model allows employees and clients to join forces on particular projects, even if they are working remotely. According to Podio’s website, the technology is useful for sales, recruitment and marketing tasks and can be embedded into other cloud-based applications like Dropbox and Google Apps.

Terms of the acquisition deal were not announced and it wasn't immediately what the acquisition will mean for Podio's Copenhagen employees.

Brent Caine of Citrix’s online services division said the acquisition represented an exciting new chapter for the company.

“Podio extends our ability to provide a simple, secure and ‘works for everyone’ collaborative work platform in this post-PC era,” he said.

Ray Wang, the CEO of research and advisory firm Constellation Research, told that the acquisition appeared to reflect Citrix’s "entrance into the 'future of work' software space”.

"When you think about where you work, what you work on it, when you work, and even the reasons for why you work, they're changing," Wang said.

Citrix will reveal its plans for Podio at a synergy conference in San Francisco next month.
