Following the preliminary examination of the suspect they arrested, the public prosecutor and police in Malmö have criticised the media for naming the suspect and publishing pictures of him.
The say doing so may interfere with their investigation into the 50 or so shooting incidents targeting immigrants in the Malmö area over the past year.
“It is unlikely that the same man is behind all the shootings,” Börje Sjöholm of the Malmö police said.
Swedish police have arrested a 38-year-old man suspected of being the gunman in a series of recent racially-motivated shootings.
The suspect was arrested on Saturday and later released. He has now been remanded on charges of one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder. He is also suspected of another two attempted murders. The shootings reportedly occurred in the period October 2009 to August 2010.
Following the arrest, police raided the man’s Malmö residence, reportedly confiscating several boxes of evidence, including two firearms.
The suspect will remain in custody until November 23 and a possible extension is expected.
Police said the man had no criminal record and he is to undergo psychological evaluation.
