Select Shopping | Arty Christmas markets

Christmas comes early in Denmark and so do these quirky markets. If you’re stuck in a rut again about what to get cousin Ida or how to impress your new high society Hellerup chums, why not try these arty farty markets. Nab yourself a steal or even a one-off piece by a talented student. You may end up walking away with a watercolour by the next Monet or an exquisite jewellery box from an upcoming Fabergé.

Fine arts and architecture market

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School, Philip de Langes Alle 10, Cph K; Sat 11:00-17:00, Sun 11:00- 15:00

For that hard-to-buy-for male, look no further. For the first time ever, talented design and architecture students will display their wares together. In a country renowned for its talented design students, expect to find some stunning pieces for only a quarter of the retail price. And to ensure just the right Christmas mood, warm gløgg and aebleskiver will keep the chilly weather at bay.

Textile artists market

Design 19E, 2nd floor, Ryesgade 19, Cph K; Fri 2 Dec, 16:00–20:00, Sat 3 Dec, 11:00–17:00

To avoid that argument with your little sister about how little effort you put into her gift, make a visit to Design 19E where textile artists will be flaunting their creations. Permanent workshop members will exhibit alongside guest designers – this year features Anne Black, Superlove and TriCot Tage. This is your one-stop shop for jewellery, linens, clothing, pillows, ceramics and a whole lot more. I think Father Christmas even gets inspiration here.

Art bazaar at School of Visual Art

Charlottenborg basement cafeteria, Kongens Nytorv 1, Cph K; Sat 3 Dec, 10:00–17:00

The talented students here have done away with impressing their teachers and are looking to impress you with their wide variety of creations. Everything from big to small works of art, ceramics, sculptures, graphics, paintings and drawings will be on sale. This school has produced some big names over the years such as Olafur Eliasson and Jeppe Hein. So this is the place to make that first step into art collecting at a reasonable price!

Jewellery Market

Jane Kunnik shop and backyard, Gothersgade 54, Cph K, Sat 11:00-17:00

Nothing says love more than a beautiful piece of jewellery. In the backyard of Jane’s shop you’ll find a cosy workshop house where some great designers will show you their latest and greatest creations. As you wander around with your obligatory gløgg, Rasmus Anderson will tempt you with his ‘fantasy’ metal designs, while silversmith ‘Claus’ will make you feel like you’ve wandered back in time with his lovingly made pieces. A very social and interactive vibe is encouraged here, so don’t be shy to chat with the designers or discuss that certain piece you’d like them to make for you.
