I’d like a different size … and another glass of champagne

Fashion in Copenhagen is something you notice immediately. The Danes all look like models, and their ensembles always hit the perfect medium between “I just threw this on” and “I’m a sartorial genius.” As such, the city has become one of the fashion capitals of the world, and this weekend is here to celebrate that fact.

The first Copenhagen fashion show was held at Bella Center in 1968, but the city didn’t host its first festival until 1981. Since then, Copenhagen Fashion Week has transformed from a small caterpillar into an internationally-respected butterfly.

Unfortunately, the fashion world is rife with secret passwords and exclusivity; Vivienne Westwood and French Connection aren’t likely to open their doors to just anyone. That’s where the Copenhagen Fashion Festival steps in to invite us mere mortals to play dress-up.

The line-up for this weekend looks like a great mix of fashion and culture. For one, Cinemateket is running a miniature film festival through Sunday, from the theme of ‘Dreams of Darkness and Colour’ to the fashionable history of the 1930s to a look at how Danish designers utilise the medium of film to showcase their collections. Fashion and film buffs will rejoice in kind.

For another, the end of Fashion Week also means a good excuse to party hard. Fashion Week closes out on Saturday at the swanky First Hotel Sankt Petri, while the Fashion Festival loosens up the ties a party at the always-cool HIVE. But the place you probably want to be – and be seen – is at Simons when Danish designer Peter Jensen hosts what is sure to be an enticingly exclusive bash.

But the real kick this weekend happens when you see all the stuff you can do without dropping a single kroner. Starting on Friday with Fashion Night Out, the shops of Copenhagen welcome you through their doors with open arms – where a free glass of bubbly is waiting! Scouring through the overwhelming number of events, we’ve compiled a list of places you can go throughout the weekend and reap the benefits of living in the fashion capital of Scandinavia.
