On this day in 2007, Danish researchers set sail for the North Pole to gather geological data – a month after Russia pinned its flag on the seabed.

The month-long expedition was part of a project costing 230 million kroner to prove the Lomonosov Ridge, rich in oil and gas reserves, is connected to Greenland.
