It’s almost that time of year again when a little corner of Copenhagen gets transformed into a little corner of England for the Saint Alban’s Church Summer Fête.
With numerous stalls selling British goods, books and homemade treats as well as music, food and fun for all the family, the annual fundraiser for Copenhagen’s Anglican (Episcopal) Church will be held this year on Saturday 22 August from 10:00 to 17:00.
A corner of Ireland!
But, with the new chaplain for the English-speaking congregation, the Revd Darren McCallig, being a proud Irishman, perhaps it would be more accurate to say that Churchillparken, where the church is located, will be transformed into a little bit of the Emerald Isle this year!
The Revd Darren, who took the helm at Saint Alban’s in the spring, is certainly keen to underline the international nature of the congregation and of the event.
All the usual suspects
“The Summer Fête is a real celebration of what we’re about at Saint Alban’s,” he told the Weekly Post.
“It is, of course, rooted in the tradition of summer fêtes and fairs that are held in most parish churches in the UK and Ireland at this time of the year. So, we will have all of the expected elements: plenty of bric-a-brac, home-made jams, marmalades and cakes, books in both English and Danish, as well as a BBQ and beer and tea tents.”
Expect diversity
But there will also be a few surprises that you might not bank on seeing at an English fete in, for example, St Albans!
“We are a very diverse community here at Saint Alban’s and the entertainment will reflect this diversity with everything from Celtic bagpipes to African drumming and recitals by our Norwegian organist,” he continued.
“We are also delighted that the Jane Austen Dancers and the Hildegaard Ensemble will be part of the day’s line-up, along with many talented musicians from our own multi-national congregation.”
Something for everyone
“So, if you enjoy browsing stalls in search of bargains, or picking up some books and handcrafted gifts, or stocking up on marmalades for the year, then do come along and join us on Saturday 22 August.
The Summer Fête is also a great opportunity to spend time with old friends or make some new ones. All in all, it’s going to be a great day with something for everyone.”
