The Mystical Supper, Icon by Simon Ushakov (1685)

Maundy Thursday, which commemorates the Last Supper, is a public holiday in Denmark – which is strange as the other two major eves – New Year’s Eve and Christmas Eve – aren’t technically holidays, even though everyone takes them off anyway.

Traditions include giving special coins to the poor or elderly, the cleansing of feet and sniffing out hidden chocolate while the parents are sleeping off the first of many hangovers.
