The location of a new 2,800-hectare test centre, featuring eight 450 metre-high turbines the size of the Empire State Building (antenna and all), will be confirmed at the end of the year.
There are three North Jutland sites in contention: Tønder, Esbjerg, and one straddling the municipalities of Brønderslev and Jammerbugt.
The site will be selected by a panel made up of experts from Bolig- og Planstyrelsen, the Technical University of Denmark and Energistyrelsen.
New test centre sorely needed
The wind industry is adamant that existing test facilities in Denmark are hindering the industry’s development.
“Together with the governments of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, the Danish government has set an ambitious target to increase offshore wind power capacity tenfold by 2050,” said the minister for housing and the interior, Christian Rabig Madsen, who maintains that the construction of the new test centre is necessary to accelerate wind energy production.
The selection will be made by the end of this year, while its construction is expected to be completed in 2027.
