  • The Fourth International Forum on Migration Statistics is taking place in Malmö

Migration experts, policy makers, statisticians, and data experts from around the world have gathered in Malmö, Sweden, for the Fourth International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS). The event runs from 16 to 18 June and focuses on improving the way migration data is collected and used.

This year, the Forum is looking closely at how migration affects men and women differently. It also explores new technology like Big Data and artificial intelligence to better track people moving from one country to another. Since 2014, more than 72,000 migrants have died or gone missing on their journeys, showing how important good data is.

“Every number in the data is a human life,” said Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). “The IFMS helps experts work together so migration policies are based on facts and help save lives.”

A big topic this year is the new United Nations guidelines on migration statistics. For the first time, these rules clearly separate international migration from short-term movement between countries. This is an important step to make migration data clearer and easier to compare between countries.

During the three-day event, experts will talk about six main topics, including predicting migration trends and using data to create better policies. They will also discuss how good data can support safe and legal migration, and help fight false stories about migrants.

Bjørg Sandkjær, Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said the Forum is key to making sure people’s ideas about migration match the facts. She said it is important to show the positive effects of safe migration while warning about the risks of illegal movement.

The IFMS 2025 is organised by the OECD, together with IOM, the UN, Malmö University, and the Swedish government.

  • Football: Thomas Frank takes over Spurs

Danish Thomas Frank resigns from Brentford FC to take over as manager for Tottenham Hotspur.

Thomas Frank came to Brentford in 2018, and after four consecutive successful seasons with Brentford in the Premier League, since their promotion from the Championship in the 20/21 season, Thomas Frank is now ready for a new adventure in London.

Frank is facing a tough challenge as he needs Spurs to be competitive both in England and on the international scene. Tottenham came from a position of inconsistency by winning their first trophy in years while disappointing with 17th place in the Premier League.

Tottenham qualified for next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League, so the Dane must be looking to stabilize the team.

In Denmark, he is recognised as a coach with an approachable character and good people skills, and for a certain curious departure from Brøndby IF, where he was head coach between 2013 – 2016.

Brøndby IF and Frank’s ways parted after Brøndby Chairman Jan Bech criticized Thomas Frank in an online Brøndby fan forum, using Bech’s son’s alias.

  • New rules give better support to grieving parents and parents of hospitalized infants

The Danish Parliament has adopted new rules to improve support for parents who lose a child or have a newborn hospitalized for an extended period. The changes will strengthen the right to leave and access to parental benefits.

From 1 July 2025, parents on bereavement leave will be entitled to extended parental benefits. When calculating the right to these benefits, periods where the parent has received compensation for lost earnings will no longer reduce the entitlement.

Employment Minister Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen said: “These parents are going through an incredibly difficult time—both those who have lost a child and those who do not know what lies ahead. My hope is that with the new rules, we can provide a bit more financial stability in a time of great sorrow and worry.”

A separate change, effective 1 January 2026, extends the right to leave and benefits for parents with newborns in hospital. Currently, the leave is limited to three months in total. Under the new rules, each parent will be entitled to up to 12 months of leave and parental benefits in such cases.

The rules will also apply to parents whose infants are sent home for continued treatment. So-called “early home stays” will be treated the same as hospitalizations.

  • Copenhagen Cooking 2025 announces program

From August 15 to 24, Copenhagen will host its annual food festival, Copenhagen Cooking, featuring over 100 events across the city. The program includes food experiences for a wide audience, ranging from competitions and long-table dinners to cooking classes and pop-up restaurants.

The festival’s friendship region this year is Provence. According to festival director Katja Seerup Clausen, this theme will be reflected in several events related to French cuisine, including a ratatouille competition, dinners with traditional French dishes at the Glyptotek, and a pétanque tournament with food prizes.

Another focal point for the festival is the onion, described by Clausen as an often overlooked ingredient. The onion will be featured in a series of dinners at locations including Bispebjerg Hospital and Lunas Køkken. Organic onions will also be distributed free at the festival site for visitors to use at home.

In addition to these themes, Copenhagen Cooking will hold long-table dinners at new locations. Notable events include a dinner in the middle of Kongens Nytorv arranged by Eva Hurtigkarl, Royal Copenhagen, and Magasin, as well as sushi classes and dinners on a rooftop terrace above Frederiksberg Centret hosted by Sushi Lovers.

Traditional events such as Frederiksberg Høstfest and Smørrebrødets Dag will also take place. For Smørrebrødets Dag, the format has changed: fixed seating and menus have been removed, allowing guests to explore individual restaurant offerings.

Many events at the festival site in Kødbyen are free to attend. More information and tickets can be found at www.copenhagencooking.dk.

Copenhagen Cooking is supported by Copenhagen Municipality, Frederiksberg Municipality, and Nørrebro Bryghus.

  • Denmark accelerates defence reforms: extended conscription and new mobilisation force planned

The Danish government has announced that key reforms to strengthen national defence will be implemented sooner than expected.

Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed today on Constitution Day (Grundlovsdag) that the newly extended 11-month military service will begin in February 2026, six months earlier than originally scheduled.

The measure is part of a broader effort to increase Denmark’s military readiness amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.

In a video posted on Facebook, Poulsen stated that a new mobilisation force is also being planned. It will consist of thousands of former conscripts who can be called back to service in the event of a war or major crisis.

According to the minister, the rapid implementation of these reforms is a direct response to the changing security landscape in Europe. “When there is urgency around air defence, new conscription, and the establishment of a new mobilisation force, it is because we once again have war in Europe — and because the world we know is changing rapidly,” he said.

The government will also make a decision next week on acquiring Denmark’s first ground-based air defence systems in two decades. The systems are expected to be operational in 2026.

  • Nørrebro in Copenhagen will be largely closed to car traffic and public transportation today

One of the most anticipated events in Copenhagen’s music calendar will take place this afternoon in Nørrebro. The street party, part of the Distortion festival, will run from 16:00 to 22:00. Dozens of events will take place along the route from Dronning Louises Bro—which will be closed—to Assistens Kirkegård. The event is free and open to the public.

Car traffic will be blocked throughout the area, and buses will not operate in the affected zones. The metro will run as usual. While it is technically allowed to cycle through the neighborhood, it is not recommended, as large crowds are expected and navigating the area may be difficult.

The streets will reopen after 22:00, when cleanup operations begin.

If you are interested in Distortion and today’s street party, we have published an article with more details and practical tips for attendees.
