Vipps MobilePay, the company behind the popular Danish and Nordic mobile payment apps, has joined the EuroPA initiative in order to make digital wallets interoperable across European borders. The aim is to allow users in different countries to send and receive money as easily as they do domestically.
The announcement means that MobilePay and Vipps users in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland will soon be able to transfer funds to users of wallets in countries such as Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Poland. This development follows a similar move earlier this year by wallet providers in southern Europe, including Italy’s Bancomat, Spain’s Bizum, and Portugal’s MB Way.
Available in a few months
The EuroPA collaboration is supported by the European Mobile Payment Systems Association (EMPSA), and the participating companies expect the first test transactions to begin in the coming months. The goal is to enable full interoperability within a year.
“This is a big step for us,” said Jeanette Hertzum, Country Manager for Denmark at Vipps MobilePay. “With this partnership, we ensure that Vipps and MobilePay users will be able to use their wallet in more countries and for more types of payments.”
Vipps MobilePay estimates that the joint effort could potentially benefit over 100 million users across Europe.
In March 2025, the southern European wallets involved in EuroPA enabled cross-border payments among Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Andorra. With Vipps MobilePay and Poland’s Blik now joining, the number of participating users increases significantly.
No new app
Users of Vipps and MobilePay were already able to send money across Nordic borders following a merger between the two services last year. The extension of this functionality to southern and eastern Europe is the next step in making wallet-based payments more widely usable across the EU.
The EMPSA initiative aims to address the fragmentation of mobile payments in Europe by allowing national systems to work together. The project does not introduce a new app or platform but focuses on making existing wallets compatible.
Vipps MobilePay operates in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, serving over 12 million users. No official date has been given for the public rollout of the cross-border functionality.
