According to the online magazine “Luxury Gold” Copenhagen is ranked 5 on the list of the most expensive cities in the world. Danes living here might not realize this fact, although one of the reasons Danes typically enjoy travelling abroad is the fact that prices are lower practically everywhere else, with Norway and Switzerland being some of the very few exceptions. Both tourists, expats, and other foreigners living in Copenhagen are, however, constantly reminded about the high cost of living, dining, etc.
For that exact reason, it is worth highlighting some of the free events and opportunities that Copenhagen and the enclave municipality, Frederiksberg have to offer this summer.
Nemoland, the bistro and bar at the heart of Christiania, is, for instance, hosting a number of free concerts in June, both Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, including Caribbean Fridays Friday 27th of June.
Copenhagen’s Royal Library, nicknamed “The Black Diamond” for its architectural profile, hosts free exhibitions and concerts. Fridays at 4 in both June and early July, there are, for instance, free Friday Jazz concerts outside the library with a view of the harbor.
If you bring children, why not head to KU.BE – Frederiksberg’s large cultural and movement center. At KU.BE Kids and their adults can explore balance, heights, and climbing skills on the play hill or try their hand at the indoor tube slide, climbing labyrinth, and all the other play installations around the building. For the little ones, there’s a cushioned area, and for the brave ones, there’s a climbing net with a great view. It’s free to use, and when tummies start rumbling, KU.BE’s cafe is a hit.
If you want to recharge the batteries between concerts and other activities, there are several green spaces owned by the University of Copenhagen, but Landbohøjskolens Have (The Horticultural Garden) on the Frederiksberg Campus is probably the most well-known and definitely worth a visit. Access is free of charge, but try to arrive early to get a spot. Bring a blanket and a picnic basket and enjoy both the small botanical garden and the small café located next to the small pond with ducks.
I apologize for the high cost of living, but I nevertheless hope you will enjoy the summer and your stay in our capital, be it short-term or long-term.
