Historic best director Oscar nomination for Thomas Vinterberg as ‘Druk’ makes shortlist for best international feature

Thomas Vinterberg has received an unexpected Oscar nomination for best director for his work on ‘Druk’ (‘Another Round’).

This is Denmark’s first ever nomination in the category! Sweden has previously picked up six nods, and Norway one, but never before has a Dane been nominated.

Carl Theodor Dreyer, Lars von Trier, Billie August, Gabriel Axel, Susanne Bier … Vinterberg has surpassed them all.

A strong favourite
As expected, ‘Druk’ picked up a nod for ‘Best International Feature’ – an award normally referred to as Best Foreign Language Film.

Fortunately for the Danish film, its main rival so far during award season, the Korean-language film ‘Minari’, is ineligible for the award because it is US-produced.

‘Druk’ is an odds-on 4/11 favourite to win the Oscar, but faces stiff competition from Bosnian entry ‘Quo Vadis, Aida’, which is 3/1 in the betting.

Make that three Danish noms!
Meanwhile, Mikkel EG Nielsen has been nominated for best film editing for ‘Sound of Metal’.

He has also been nominated for a BAFTA in the same category.

And Elvira Lind has been nominated in the category of Best Short Film for ‘The Letter Room’. Based in New York, her husband is the ‘Star Wars’ actor Oscar Isaac.
