Dir: Kimberly Peirce; US horror, 2013, 100 mins; Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde
In the third screen adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel of the same name, a sheltered high school girl unleashes telekinetic powers on her small town after being taunted by her peers. More horrific than truly scary, Moretz is less than subtle as a cowering Carrie and Peirce is clearly less than expert in the horror genre. Even so, Moore is fantastic as a deranged, over-religious mother – a welcome distraction from the predictable, drawn-out script.

Thor: The Dark World (11)

Dir: Alan Taylor; US action/fantasy, 2013, 112 mins; Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins
Picking up from where The Avengers left off, Thor (Hemsworth) must battle to save the universe from the mysterious Malekith, joining forces with love interest Jane Foster (Portman) and adoptive brother/nemesis Loki (Hiddleston). While enjoyable in parts, the film is largely disorganised and ultimately unsatisfying, with Portman pretty much asleep through most of the second half and Hiddleston only present merely to set up a third film.
