The police are stepping up their search for the deputy mayor of Vordingborg Council, Martin Leider Olsen (S), who has been missing since Monday afternoon.

Poor weather had hampered the search for the local politician, but now the police are considering adding a helicopter to their search efforts.

“There aren’t too many options left, so we are considering a helicopter for our search,” Flemming Hartmann, the head of the South Zealand and Lolland Falster Police, told Jyllands-Posten newspaper.

“Because of fog we couldn’t use the helicopter yesterday and instead searched on the ground, but now we are concentrating on the watery areas because his car was found near the Storstrøms Bridge.”

According to the police, Olsen went missing at around noon on Monday and his family contacted the police later in the day because they had spoken with him and he indicated that he wasn’t feeling well.

Mayor in shock 
The police searched in vain for Olsen throughout Tuesday, despite finding his abandoned car, a white Peugeot 107, near the bridge in north Falster.

Vordingborg mayor, Knud Larsen (V), was shocked and distraught over Olsen’s disappearance.

“Naturally, I am very shocked and touched over the news. Right now, my thoughts are with Martin’s family and friends and I hope that he will soon be found unscathed,” Larsen said.

Olsen ran for mayor of Vordingborg Council during the local elections in November last year, but lost out to Larsen.
