It all started out as an experimental party project back in 1998, evolving into annual intimate citywide happenings before the unstoppable Distortion juggernaut exploded into life with 100,000 guests in 2011.

The mother of all street parties, Distortion is four days of beautiful chaos when the normally cool and calm Copenhagen is turned upside down to the sound of 40 or so sound systems in a rave labyrinth. 

For the first 3 days, from 16 – 22, street parties transform inner city Copenhagen. One of the highlights is usually the party on Dronning Louise’s bridge by the lakes of Nørrebro, on Wednesday this year.

After the street parties, the dedicated raveaholics will head on to the nightclubs for concerts by artists such as the legendary Sun Ra Orchestra. Rolling Stone magazine describes the Final Party on Saturday as a “wild, feverish, relentless, free-form monster” and Refshaleøen is the perfect warehouse rave setting.

You need to buy tickets for the concerts and Final Party, but the street parties are free, although the conscientious party-goer will buy an armband for 100kr to help keep Distortion alive and finance the inevitable tidying up. Look out for happenings such as the hipster fun run at 14:00 on Saturday, starting at Gråbrødre Torv.

All the parties have individual themes and music styles, so check the website to find the parties to match your mood; drag queens, air guitarists and skateboarders are all catered for – a truly unique experience so don’t leave town!
